Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is biodegradable and biocompatible polyester which is synthesized by metabolism of microorganisms and chemical polymerization. We prepare various size of PHA particles and evaluate adhesive strength of the particle solution between poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) hydrogels. First, monodisperse PHA particles are obtained by removing chloroform in uniform sized chloroform-in-water emulsions with PHA polymers generated by membrane emulsification. Then, those PHA nanoparticles are applied as an adhesive for PDMA hydrogels, and their adhesive strength is measured by lap shear test. We demonstrate that PHA nanoparticles show higher adhesive strength between the hydrogels than micron PHA particles and similar size of ceramic nanoparticles do due to their fusion with neighboring particles.
