Designing Durable Aqueous Zinc Metal Batteries Using Polymer Materials

Zinc metal batteries based on an aqueous electrolyte (AZMBs) are promising next-generation system to replace conventional lithium ion batteries which exhibit potential safety concerns. AZMBs show their advantageous properties on facile manufacturing process, low material cost, fast charge/discharge kinetics, and inherent safety. However, zinc metal, the most intensively utilized anode material for AZMBs, present severe dendritic growth and degraded anode reversibility that result in inferior cyclability. Thus, alleviating ion gradient and inducing homogeneous distribution of Zn2+ cations become critical strategy to overcome Zn dendrite issues. Here, we present polymer materials to improve cyclability of AZMBs by enhancing reversibility of Zn metal anode through modifying ion transportation. Both polymeric interphase layer and gel electrolyte enable uniform metal growth without the formation of Zn dendrites. As a result, the modified systems demonstrate betterment in electrochemical performances on actual operating tests.
