Transition from disordered to ordered domain morphologies in poly(glycidyl carbonate methacrylate-<em>b</em>-glycidyl methacrylate) by selective solvation of lithium ions

Carbon dioxide insertion into epoxide substrates containing methacrylate units can produce monomers that can be further polymerized to polymers with a linear carbon backbone and cyclic carbonate pendant groups. Here, we convert glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to glycidyl carbonate methacrylate (GCMA) by catalytic cycloaddition reaction. Sequential reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization is then employed to synthesize diblock copolymers consisting of poly(GCMA) and poly(GMA) blocks. Due to the similarity in monomer chemistry, poly(GCMA-b-GMA) shows a disordered morphology. We conduct selective hydrolysis of the poly(GMA) block, followed by selective incorporation of Li ions into the poly(GCMA) block. The resulting block copolymer is found to be capable of microphase separation at room temperature, exhibiting well-ordered domain morphologies.
