Polymer/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrids have received great attentions in academia and industries, aiming at endowing new performance properties to matrix polymers. In this study, polypropylene (PP)/POSS hybrids were prepared by a reactive melt blending of maleated PP with a octaglycidyl POSS, a cage having glycidyl group on each Si on the cage, in the presence of a small amount of transesterfication catalyst in an internal mixer. Structure, thermomechanical and rheological properties of the prepared PP/POSS hybrids were characterized by FTIR analysis, solubility test, DSC, DMA, tensile test and dynamic rheometry. The results revealed that the POSS was grafted onto the PP chain via anhydride-epoxy reaction during the melt blending, which led to enhanced mechanical properties and more pronounced shear thinning effect along with solid-like rheological behavior as compared to neat PP.
