We developed a waterborne polyurethane 1K clearcoat with superior properties using an encapsulation method. In this method, a blocked polyisocyanate (b-PIC) was used as a potential crosslinker within acrylic polyol and homogeneously dispersed in water. The acrylic polyol shell was designed to ensure water phase dispersion and clearcoat requirements. The design of PIC-encapsulated polyol ensures proximity between hydroxyl and isocyanate groups, resulting in a uniformly crosslinked polyurethane clearcoat. This novel 1K clearcoat holds significant potential in waterborne coatings technology due to its cost-effectiveness and practicality. By reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions during clearcoat applications, it also offers a promising avenue to protect the environment.
