Supracolloidal Chains Assembled from Diblock Copolymer Micelles with Fluorescent Patches

As nanoscale colloidal building blocks, patchy micelles of diblock copolymers can assemble into supracolloidal chains. We recently demonstrated the functionalization of these supracolloidal chains by incorporating fluorophores into the micellar cores. We could tune the emission colors from fluorescent supracolloidal chains by combining patchy micelles having fluorophores with dissimilar colors. In this presentation, we modified diblock copolymer micelles by attaching dyes in the micellar coronas. Then, we induced patch formation on the micelle by segregating the corona into two patches, resulting in the micelle having the fluorescent patches. These patchy micelles were polymerized into fluorescent supracolloidal chains by merging the patches in neighboring micelles. Moreover, we incorporated the donor and acceptor dyes in separate patchy micelles so that we could observe fluorescence resonance energy transfer between the dyes located in the patches upon assembling of the micelles.
