Solution-Free Synthesis of MXene-based Hybrid Structures by Rapid Joule Heating

Various MXene-based hybrid structures received wide attention for high mechanical property with structural engineering and notable performance from engineered catalytic active sites. Yet, conventional synthetic methods for these materials have been mostly limited to solution-based processing, severely oxidizing MXenes. In this study, rapid Joule heating is employed for the first time to synthesize various metal nanoparticles (NPs) on MXene. This method allows minimization of MXene oxidation, not to mention the broadened compositional space with multi-metallic NPs synthesis. The synthesized platinum metal-MXene hybrid nanostructure exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity, showing a hydrogen evolution reduction overpotential of 43.6 mV and high stability up to 15 hours. Rapid heating method enables successful synthesis of MXene hybrid structures with minimum MXene damage for application in diverse fields where synergistic effect of metal-MXenes significantly enhance the performance.
