Structural Multi-Color Patterns with Microdome Arrays created by Single-Step Photolithography and Reflow

Micro-scale dome structures show structural colors by the interference of light traveling along varied trajectories of total internal reflection at the concave interface, resulting in ring-pattern colors in a single micro-structure without periodic arrangement. Here, we propose a facile method to fabricate well-controlled micro-dome arrays with multi-colors using photolithography and thermal reflow. Adjusting the curvature of the radius of the dome fine-tunes array colors for simultaneous multi-color pattern fabrication on one substrate. The arrays feature light-selective coloration, angle-dependent variation, and one-side coloration. By altering the concave interfacial medium of arrays, refractive index contrast can be reduced for pattern encryption. PDMS replica molding enhances stability and elasticity, enabling color change and reversible recovery under tension. Therefore, these micro-dome arrays hold great promise in anti-counterfeiting, display tech, and strain sensing.
