Marine biofouling, the adhesion of marine organisms on the artificial surface, causes economic and ecological problems. To inhibit marine biofouling, various methods have been investigated, and among them, hydrophilic polymer coatings have been extensively utilized owing to environment friendliness. However, drawbacks of such hydrophilic polymer coatings have been identified: when the coatings are exposed to sediment, various minerals are easily adsorbed by the polymer coating, causing the coating to lose its inherent antifouling properties. In this respect, amphiphilic polymer coatings have been proposed as an alternative to hydrophilic polymer coatings. Herein, we report on the synthesis of amphiphilic copolymers composed of carboxybetaine methacrylamide and trifluoroethylmethacrylate and the grafting of the copolymers onto solid surfaces.
