Fluorinated Cyclic Olefin Polymers from Metal-Free Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) involves the polymerization of norbornene derivatives with high ring-strain initiated by transition metal alkylidene complexes. The use of transition metal complexes, however, poses limitations on the electronics/biological application of polymers from ROMP. Metal-free ROMP (MF-ROMP), recently developed by Boydston et. al., circumvents the use of transition metal catalysts by utilizing photo-redox reactions in place of olefin metathesis. Despite the utility demonstrated by MF-ROMP, its monomer scope remains limited to norbornene and a few derivatives. This poster summarizes our latest discoveries on polymerizing several fluorinated norbornenes from MF-ROMP. The structural characteristics that allow for effective polymerization are investigated, and the resulting metal-free polymers exhibit promising low-dielectric interlayer materials in electronics applications.
