Mechanical deformability and charge transport of organic semiconductors for stretchable electronics

Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in enhancing the stretchability of organic semiconductors (OSCs). However, despite this progress, the electrical properties of OSCs degrade significantly when the films are deformed or repeatedly stretched. This is a crucial challenge that needs to be addressed to realize the applications of OSCs in flexible and stretchable electronics. To achieve electrical stretchability in OSCs, the charge transport pathways must be robust, which requires a deep understanding of the deformation behavior of conjugated polymers (CPs) at the molecular level. Here, I will discuss in detail the significance of controlling molecular motions, such as chain-to-chain interactions and chain stiffness, to enhance the mechanical stretchability of CP films. The effects of reducing chain stiffness by controlling the molecular structure of CPs or by introducing plasticizing molecular additives will be discussed ranging from the molecular to the mesoscale level.
