Achieving high-energy-density Li batteries is of paramount importance in expediting the advent of smart energy era. A formidable challenge facing the high-areal-mass-loading electrodes is the inhomogeneous redox reaction in their through-thickness direction, which is considerably affected by electrode binders. To address this issue, in this talk, we briefly overview the current status and challenges of high-areal-capacity Li battery cathodes based on a slurry-cast manufacturing process and also introduce a new binder design beyond a conventional PVdF binder. Our binder approach includes the amphiphilic bottlebrush polymer and cationic polymer, which open a new route toward scalable high-mass-loading electrodes with redox homogeneity in the through-thickness direction.
