Nickel Nanowire-Coated Polyester Fabrics with High Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Performance and Flexibility

The rapid increment in the usage of electric/electronic devices can create undesirable electromagnetic interference (EMI) that can cause malfunction of electronic systems and harm human health. So, inhibiting unwanted EM waves has become an essential field in materials science. To fulfill demands for thin, flexible, lightweight, and low filler-loading EMI shielding materials, 1D metal nanowires can be appropriate materials due to their superb electrical conductivity and aspect ratio. In this study, to attain advanced materials with high performance in EMI shielding and flexibility, nickel nanowires (NiNWs) were synthesized via a modified polyol method and introduced to PET fabric by a spray coating process. The microstructural features of NiNW-coated PET fabrics were characterized using TEM, SEM, EDS, XPS, and XRD. The electrical conductivity and EMI shielding performance were also investigated using electrometry and network analysis in a wide frequency range of 1-18 GHz, respectively.
