Organic molecules consisting of pi-conjugated bridge, electron donating groups (EDGs) and electron withdrawing groups (EWGs) exhibit strong tendency to form periodic molecular ordering in the solid state. For achieving high device performance in electronic and photonic applications, the chemical structure of substituted molecules and their crystal characteristics including crystal structure, morphology, and crystalline-perfectness should be simultaneously controlled. The different crystal characteristics of organic electronic transporting materials such as rylene diimides result in remarkably different charge transporting characteristics and gas sensing performance. In addition, the crystal characteristics of organic electro-optic salt materials consisting of pi-conjugated molecular cations and anions are also very sensitive to the corresponding chemical structure, leads to largely different THz wave generation performance. Here, we additionally discuss organic THz applications for organic electronics.
