A water-borne poly(amic acid) salt (W-PAAS) is a polymeric precursor for the polyimide prepared via a single-step polymerization reaction by using water as the synthetic solvent. Although the eco-friendly synthesis precursor for super-engineering plastic has advantages, the lack of understanding about the polymer itself and the polymerization mechanism reduces the accessible chemical diversity and functionality. In this presentation, we discuss this challenge by elucidating the synthetic mechanism and role of reaction components in the synthesis of W-PAAS. Based on this understanding of the polymerization mechanism, we present the design of photo-sensitive W-PAAS and its use in semi-conducting applications. Furthermore, we introduce a synthetic procedure of the macroporous polyimide via a soft-templating method by utilizing the W-PAAS as the emulsifier for the oil-in-water emulsion. We believe our approach will open a new approach to producing functional engineering plastic via eco-efficient methodology.
