This study presents a simple and environmentally friendly approach to synthesize colorless polyimide (CPI) with excellent transparency, thermal, and mechanical properties using solid-state polymerization. First, CPI precursors are synthesized in an oligomeric state in a water-alcohol co-solvent medium. These CPI precursor oligomers are readily converted to high molecular weight CPI through solid-state polymerization during thermal imidation at 300°C. Our novel synthesis strategy offers the advantage of both eco-friendliness, using aqueous solvents, and rapid synthesis of CPI oligomeric precursors in less than 30 minutes. Notably, the resulting water-based CPI films exhibit equivalent optical and mechanical properties to CPI films polymerized in conventional organic systems.
