Novel Anti-Counterfeiting Labels from Photoresponsive and Photoreactive Liquid Crystal Mixture

To develop new anti-counterfeiting labels, a photoresponsive and photoreactive liquid crystal (LC) mixture containing a newly synthesized cyanostilbene-based LC monomer (CYLCM) was formulated. When the mixture is shear-coated on a substrate, the fabricated transparent film has linearly polarized luminescence property owing to the shear-induced uniaxial orientation. UV light irradiation in programmed areas causes phase change and unpolarized luminescence in that areas, which is based on the photoisomerization of CYLCM. Subsequent blue light irradiation allows the film to be polymer-stabilized. The luminescence polarization and birefringence contrast between UV treated and untreated areas act as anti-counterfeiting effects. The demonstrated anti-counterfeiting labels have a great potential for advanced optical information storages.
