Synthesis of closed-loop chemically recyclable photosensitive dynamic polymers with tunable thermo-mechanical properties

In the pursuit of sustainable polymers, there is a growing interest in closed-loop chemical recycling to monomer (CRM), a process that allows post-consumer polymers to revert to their original monomers. Cyclopentene (CP) is a representative molecule exemplifying an efficient CRM process. However, polymers derived from CP possess limited thermal and mechanical properties, constraining their potential applications. To overcome this challenge, we designed a new CP-based monomer with a dynamic covalent functional groups that can modify the thermo-mechanical properties of its polymeric form in response to external stimuli. Our synthesized polymers exhibited outstanding CRM efficiency and tunable thermal and mechanical properties. Moreover, these polymers demonstrated damage detection and self-healing behaviors due to the dynamic covalent functional groups, providing their potential capability in various applications.
