Photo-Crosslinkable Single Component Copolymer for Functional Organic Coatings

Poly(ethylene oxide)-based random terpolymers with photo-labile repeating unit and amine-reactive functional group capable of a single component functional organic coating were achieved. Coatings fabricated with the terpolymers were crosslinked by UV light, which were applicable on different substrates from organic to inorganic. The resulting coatings were chemically versatile to immobilize complex molecules on the surfaces by (i) post-crosslinking functionalization, and (ii) the formation of a composite coating by mixing a specific protein, i.e. fish skin gelatin, that is capable of the formation of the dual network. The resulting copolymer coatings have been thoroughly characterized by using a variety of functional molecules to attain photopatterns with the incorporation of specific functionality, to control the surface wettability, or to regulate adhesion of biological objects, highlighting their applicability to surface coatings and photolithographic applications.
