Fungal based living material fiber for Electrochemical applications

The growing threat of pollution and the increasing energy demand require the development of a sustainable, cost-effective energy platform. Given this perspective, there is a growing scientific interest in engineered living materials (ELMs) due to their inherent environmental compatibility and distinctive functional properties in contrast to conventional synthetic processes. However, compared to the unique and remarkable performance of these ELM materials, little is known about how to modulate the properties associated with target materials using biological methods. Here we report a controllable, porous, bio-derived fiber using Ganoderma lucidum, also known as the white rot fungus. Mycelium-based living materials provide a unique pathway for biological synthesis by extracellular reduction that is distinct from other biological groups and has high surface area structures suitable for electrochemical applications. We believe our research provides a new platform for sustainable, low-cost, and effective energy materials.
