This study investigates the influence of methanol addition to phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) resins on storage stability and adhesion performance. PRF resins were synthesized by varying the methanol amount to 5%, 10%, and 15%. The structure of PRF resins was investigated using FTIR and NMR spectroscopies. The curing kinetics of these resins were assessed using isoconversional methods. The performance of PRF resins was evaluated by applying these adhesives to glue laminated timber (glulam). The results demonstrated that increasing the amount of methanol reduced viscosity, extended gelation time, and improved stability over time. As the methanol level was increased, the chemical structure of PRF resins altered. The apparent activation energy of PRF resins rose as the methanol level increased, indicating that methanol inhibited their reactivity. In addition, when the methanol level was lowered, the mechanical properties of glulam bound with PRF resins improved.
