The utilization of kraft black liquor to use as a thermoset wood adhesive was considered. For this aim, technical lignin was extracted from industrial black liquor. Then, to reduce lignin heterogeneity, acetone fractionation, and filtration procedure were done. Wood thermoset resins were prepared by adding glyoxal (40% solution) as a coupling agent to different lignin fractions. The final crosslinking of lignin polymers was completed by heating in a hot press during plywood production. The results of FTIR and 13C CP/MAS NMR showed the crosslinked network formation between lignin polymers. The results showed higher viscosity of lignin fractions after cross-linking. Also, the results of thermal analysis by TGA showed higher thermal stability in the crosslinked lignin. The high mechanical strength of the wood panel also showed promising performance of crosslinked acetone insoluble lignin fraction as bio-resin for wood bonding.
