LT-PEMFCs have low CO tolerance and catalytic activity due to their low operating temperature, which can be improved by raising the temperature. In LT-PEMFCs, Nafion has been widely used as a proton exchange membrane (PEM) but must be hydrated for ionic conductivity, so at high temperatures fuel cell performance deteriorates rapidly due to evaporation of moisture. Therefore, in this study, a PEM capable of proton conduction at an intermediate temperature of 80 to 120 ℃ was developed. Protonated phosphonic acid polymer is composed of phosphonic acid polymer and sulfonic acid polymer. Protonated system is possible to proton transfer even under anhydrous conditions as proton of sulfonic acid with a low pKa are transferred to phosphonic acid. Developed protonated PEM exhibited better mechanical properties, proton conductivity retention and peak power density than those of Nafion at intermediate temperature and low humidity.
