Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) has been widely utilized as a precursor for carbon fibers, which are promising materials for the production of lightweight composites on an industrial scale. However, in the case of PAN homopolymer, the strong intermolecular interactions between PAN molecules result in low solubility in the spinning solution. Moreover, there are side reactions such as high stabilization temperature and centralized heat release derived from the free radical mechanism. To overcome these limitations, neutral and acidic comonomers were introduced into the PAN chains. Additionally, the flammability of PAN can be a significant drawback in certain applications. In this study, we incorporated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) into PAN to form a composite material with flame retardancy and thermal stability. The PAN/h-BN composites were analyzed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, SEM, DSC, and TGA. This was supported by Korea National University of Transportation in 2023.
