We demonstrate a concept of mechanoresponsive smart windows based on chiral liquid crystalline elastomers (CLCEs) that show Young's modulus below than 100 kPa, such that it can achieve the transmittance change in the full visible-to-near infrared wavelength with an extremely low degree of the compressive stress. A highly soft CLCE is prepared through the stabilization of a low-density elastomeric polymer in a small molecular liquid crystal. A film of CLCE is conformally placed on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) supporting layer to achieve the stable mechanical response and the durability in cyclic operation. The proposed device in this study may offer a new insight in the study of mechanoresponsive smart windows with a high energy efficiency and a mechanical durability.
