Chirality of biomolecules governs various biological activities and there have been several attempts to control chirality of nanomaterials in order to enhance their performance in biosystems. However, these attempts have been limited to a handful of materials. Here, we report biocompatible chiral iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for controllable nanomedicine and their chiral specific biological interactions. Simple but effective chiral surface treatment for iron oxide MNPs using chiral polypeptides enables enantioselective cellular uptake of the MNPs; MNPs coordinated with D-polypeptides (D-MNPs) demonstrated higher cellular uptake compared to L-counterparts (L-MNPs). This enantiospecific cellular uptake of the chiral MNPs was exploited for magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment whereby breast cancer cells treated with D-MNPs were exhibited higher temperature increase under alternating magnetic field, compared to breast cancer cells treated with L-MNPs.
