Preparation of biobased super engineering plastic nanocomposite with cellulose nanofibers

Using bio-based materials to produce plastic is crucial for sustainable development. In this research, we synthesized a bio-super engineering plastic by utilizing biomass-derived isosorbide-based poly(arylene ether ketone) (IK). However, the synthesized IK exhibited brittleness due to its rigid structure. To address this issue, we incorporated cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as fillers. The CNFs were dispersed in molten isosorbide and polymerized using an in situ method to enhance the mechanical characteristics of the composites. We assessed the impact of the CNF filler on IK through tensile testing, analysis of the fracture surface's morphology, and rheology. The addition of 0.05 wt% CNF increased the elongation, acting as a plasticizer. On the other hand, 0.1 wt% CNF not only increased the tensile strength but also the elongation, leading to a twofold improvement in tensile toughness by enhancing the interaction between the matrix and filler.
