Although highly cross-linked epoxy has excellent mechanical performance, its intrinsic brittleness limits further applications. The aim of this study was to self-toughen epoxy without any additive by simply controlling reaction kinetics and cross-linked network topology. For various reactant formulation and temperature, the epoxy cross-linking reaction kinetics are analyzed using quantitative reaction kinetics modeling, and these will be correlated with cross-linked network topology and mechanical properties. The results provide practical information to determine reactant formulation and processing conditions for achieving high mechanical properties of epoxy. Therefore, this research may enable to the extension of epoxy applications that requiring high toughness such as carbon fiber-reinforced plastic used for automotive and aerospace structural parts.
