Surface Functionalization of Titanium Implants for Osseointegration Improvement

Titanium (Ti) and its alloys are widely used in dental implants due to their biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, a major challenge in inserting Ti implants into bone is the weak bonding strength between the implant and the host bone. Polyphenols, compounds found in nature, possess biocompatible, bioadhesive, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Specifically, polyphenols based on catechol or pyrogallol moieties exhibit strong non-covalent and covalent interactions. Coating Ti implants with natural polyphenols significantly increases the gene expression level of integrins, which are bone cell receptors and regulators, compared to ozone-treated Ti. Although hyaluronic acid has good biocompatibility and biodegradability, it lacks sufficient mechanical strength and tissue adhesive properties. However, interaction with CD44 enables rapid wound healing after transplantation. This study aims to synthesize polyphenol modified hyaluronic acid at varying substitution rates to evaluate adhesive strength and osteogenesis.
