Prussian Blue Analogues in Rechargeable Battery Applications

Prussian Blue and its analogues (PBAs) exhibit significant scientific intrigue due to their interesting characteristics originating from the formation of continuous chemical bonds between transition metal ions and ligand molecules. In this presentation, I will present a comprehensive range of applications for PBAs in the context of various rechargeable batteries, including their uses in energy storage, thermo-charging systems, surface coatings, and as redox mediator materials. For instance, I will introduce a Cr-based negolyte that is coordinated with strong-field ligands. The complex of [Cr(CN)6]4− tends to favor low-spin states, thereby facilitating a stable and fast redox reaction, capable of mitigating strong Jahn–Teller effects, resulting in low redox potential, high stability, and rapid kinetics. This complex shows promise for use in aqueous redox-flow batteries, exhibiting a high-energy density of 11.4 Wh L−1 and a long-lasting lifetime of thousands of cycles.
