Crystal defects and surface chemistry play a critical role in determining the physicochemical, electrochemical, and optoelectronic properties of 2D MXene nanomaterials, as well as their environmental stability and processability. However, precise controlling MXene crystal structure remains challenging, primarily due to difficulties in controlling oxygen substitution to the crystal lattice of MXene. Moreover, complex oxidation states of transition metals and difficulty in controlling surface terminations during etching synthesis also hinder the precise control of surface chemistry. In this presentation, I will provide our recent research progresses on controlling the surface chemistry and crystal defects of MXenes for the electronic and energy applications.
