 Advancing electrical performance of organic optoelectronic devices by improvement of conjugated polymer morphology through external electric field treatment

External electric field (EEF) treatment could be a promising simple non-contact method for controlling the morphology of conjugated polymers. The EEF can induce dipole alignment in molecules and expansion of molecular crystals, and it is possible to control the morphology in directions according to the various system of the electrical devices. Therefore, EEF treatment can improve charge carrier transport property. In this study, an n-type conjugated polymer, P(NDI2OD-T2), which has high electron mobility, improved the electrical performance as the active material of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs) by EEF treatment with the printing process. So, the electron mobility of OFETs by applying an EEF was improved from the average value of 1.69 to 2.14 (max.: 3.33) cm2/Vs. OPVs were fabricated using P(NDI2OD-T2) as an acceptor with PTB7-Th as a donor, and the power conversion efficiency was increased by 42% through EEF treatment.
