Mathematical Modeling of a Catalytic Polymerization Reactor

Catalytic polymerization is widely used to produce poly-olefin elastomers. In this study, we developed catalytic polymerization reactor model for industrial ethylene-octene co-polymerization reactor. To calculate overall behaviors of polymer chains, we adopted method of moment (MOM). Then, pseudo-kinetic scheme is applied to efficiently estimate relative contribution of each co-monomer to total polymerization. Developed model showed satisfactory agreement with plant data, in terms of temperature, co-monomer concentration, and MWD. We also evaluated influence of operating conditions on MWD. This study shows that mathematical model can be efficiently used to develop and to conduct scale-up of catalytic polymerization reactor.
