Ionic Liquid-based Magnetic Catalyst for Depolymerization of PET

Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted attention as the promising solvents in various chemical processes due to their unique properties, which include the low volatility, a wide liquid temperature range and a high thermal stability. ILs can be effectively used as catalysts, thereby reducing energy consumption and minimizing the production of harmful by-products. For PET chemical recycling, the various ILs can be synthesized and utilized. In this study, we prepared the various catalysts through the substitution of imidazolium-based compounds for PET depolymerization. The synthesized ionic liquids were characterized using Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopy to confirm its composition and properties. Additionally, the ILs we prepared exhibited paramagnetism. After PET depolymerization, we can efficiently separate the catalyst from the reacted products. Furthermore, we have plans to synthesize the stronger ionic liquids through another attachment to further enhance the PET depolymerization and separation properties.
