With the growing interest in sustainable materials, there has been a surge in demand for bioplastics. They are manufactured using biomass-derived materials to replace conventional petroleum-based plastics, but research on biodegradability/biomass content evaluation is still ongoing. Among them, the measurement of biomass content is based on ASTM D6866B, and biobased carbon, a radioactive carbon isotope that exists only in biomass produced by absorbing 14C carbon through photosynthesis by plants, is analyzed using accelerator mass spectrometry. In particular, since there is no difference in chemical structure and properties between petroleum-based monomers and biomass monomers, analytical methods based on the presence or absence of 14C are widely used. In this study, we will introduce the analysis of bioplastics using accelerator mass spectrometry and related research trends.
