Over the past decade, structural and functional recovery of polymers has received much attention from both academia and industry as a method to prolong the service life of expensive products. Most such systems have developed by recovering the original shapes and mechanical properties after deformations resulting from fractures or cuts. Our team designed an automotive clearcoat and lens protective coating which can recover their structure and property by utilizing photothermal dye. Under sunlight, developed self-healing polymer coating was heated via photothermal effect and exhibited excellent and fast scratch-healing performance. To optimize the recovery efficiency of the polymer networks, the effects of dynamic structures and photothermal dye were precisely investigated. In particular, suggested photothermal effect-based recovery of polymer networks has a strong advantage with respect to energy consumption by utilizing green energy such as sunlight.
