Direct Carbon Capture from the Ocean Through Marine-Mineralization and Afforestation with Biodegradable Plastic

When capturing carbon through biomass on land, it helps reduce carbon emissions but there is a high possibility that the biomass will be reused as energy or food, and this approach is not a practical solution to the CO2 problem. On the other hand, direct carbon capture strategies from the ocean, such as capturing carbon through photosynthesis in seaweed forests or via biomineralization with bioplastics, show promise. The captured carbon from the ocean can either remain in the ocean or sink to the deep ocean due to the physical barrier of seawater, effectively reducing carbon dioxide and potentially achieving carbon net-zero. In this presentation, I would like to share the progress of research conducted in our laboratory on reducing carbon dioxide through ocean biomineralization and marine afforestation.
