Self-assembly of Poly(ether imide)/Aramid Nanofibrillar Separators and their Li Dendrite Suppressions for Li-metal Batteries

Practical implementations of Li-metal batteries are still hindered due to the uncontrollable Li dendrite growth. Herein, we present the ultrahigh porous nanofibrillar separators with aramid nanofiber (ANF) and poly(ether imide) (PEI). Phase-inversion induced co-assembly produces unique nanofibrous structures, that are consist of ANF core nanofibers with undulating PEI sheath with ~95% of porosity. The nanoporous structures promote high degree of exposures for ether and carbonyl groups of PEI, which can significantly enhance ion affinities (~3 mS cm-2), Li+ ion transference number (~0.8) and surface ion distributions, which might result in effective suppression of Li dendrite growth in Li-metal anodes. LFP/Li and NCM/Li full cells exhibit high capacity retentions with high cathode mass loading conditions. Self-assembled assisted fabrications of AP separators would serve as noble and promising approaches for the next-generation Li-metal batteries with high energy density and fast charge-discharge capabilities.
