Synthesis of side-chain type liquid crystalline polymers based on epoxide monomers with flexible chains.

Liquid crystal polymer (LCP) is a material used as an engineering plastic in various industries such as electronics, optics and automobiles, due to its excellent thermal-mechanical properties. LCP properties are highly affected by molecular orientation based on the mesogenic interaction. LCP is representatively divided into two types main chain liquid crystal polymer (MCLCP) and side chain liquid crystal polymer (SCLCP). MCLCP has high thermal, and mechanical properties since the polymer main backbone involves mesogen structure. Whereas, in SCLCP, the mesogens are linked in the polymer side chain that has a relatively flexible polymer network. In this study, we synthesized a series of SCLCPs with different alkyl chain lengths and investigated the effect of the alkyl chains in the LCP networks. Their microstructures were investigated by POM and XRD analysis. Thermal properties were verified by TGA and DSC measurements.
