내용
Lignin is abundant and low-cost biomass polymer that has high concentration of aromaticity. Therefore, the lignin provides high mechanical and thermal properties which are not easily available from other bioplastics. In addition, because lignin is not a human food source, its supply and cost remain very stable. However, a natural lignin cannot be used in its original form because of its poor processibility and compatibility with other materials. This presentation will focus on two main topics: 1) Chemical modification of lignin for further material applications, and 2) Synthesis of well-defined biodegradable lignin-based polymers. Kraft lignin, a byproduct of the paper industry, is commonly available but not readily processible to produce commodity polymers due to its poor compatibility with other polymers. In the presentation, we will discuss multiple methods of lignin modification and synthesis of lignin-based polymers. The lignin-based polymers can be prepared by forming covalent bonds with diverse types of functional polymers. The covalent linkage is completely degradable in natural conditions, eliminating any environmental concerns regarding the production of harmful products. Unlike traditional lignin polymers, the lignin-based polymers presented in this study represent a new class of advanced and highly functional materials that can be utilized to create value-added polymers from natural biomass lignin.
