Rechargeable Li-ion batteries have led to remarkable revolution in EV and ESS. However, shot driving range due to the limited energy density of Li-ion batteries and safety issues should be overcome to meet requirements for EVs. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are considered a promising electrolyte for next-generation all-solid-state lithium batteries because they have much better safety, flexibility in the design of the cells and mechanical stability. However, PEO-based SPEs have critical limitations for practical use. The ionic conductivity is low at ambient temperature and electrochemical stability window is not sufficient for 4 V class cathode materials. In this presentation, several important challenges and future direction for the lithium polymer batteries are discussed. And also, recent studies of the PEO-based polymer electrolyte for Li-polymer batteries using Ni-rich NCM as cathode materials are presented.
