Synthesis of block copolymers of more- and less- activated monomers

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization has emerged as one of the most powerful strategies for synthesizing complex polymer architectures. However, synthesizing block copolymers using monomers with different reactivity remains a challenge due to the limited activation ranges of chain transfer agent (CTA). Here, we used switchable CTA's for synthesizing poly(methyl acrylate-block-vinyl acetate). The pyridine moiety in CTA showed excellent control for methyl acrylate and vinyl acetate when protonated and neutralized, respectively. Polymerization kinetics, architecture, and properties were systematically investigated and/or analyzed.
