PolyHIPE was prepared by polymerizing a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) composed of water and divinylbenzene. The polyHIPE was subjected to high-temperature heat treatment to prepare a carbon foam, and its performance as a supercapacitor electrode material was evaluated. During the carbonization process of polyHIPE, sulfonation was performed to prevent thermal decomposition, which was very effective in enhancing thermal stability by forming thioether bridges between polymer chains. In addition, micro-/meso-pores were created in the carbon foam through KOH activation. The hierarchically porous carbon foam carbonized after sulfonation and KOH activation on polyHIPE showed a large specific surface area and high specific capacitance.
