MXene thin films have been widely used in various electrochemical, electronic, and optical devices due to their high transparency, electrical conductivity, and chemical activity. In particular, MXenes have been grafted with organic ligands to overcome the poor oxidation stability and expand the surface chemistry where reliable methods to assemble functionalized MXenes into ultrathin films are needed. Here, we developed a versatile method for fabricating ultrathin films of MXenes functionalized with amphiphilic molecules using a self-assembly technique. Upon dropping small amounts of surface functionalized MXenes that are homogeneously dispersed in various organic solvents, rapid self-assembly occurred within 10 seconds, producing ultrathin MXene films. The resulting films showed superior optoelectronic properties and gas sensing performance compared to films made by conventional coating methods. Furthermore, the environmental stability of MXene sensors were largely enhanced.
