New materials hold the key to fundamental advances in electrochemical devices, both of which are vital in order to meet the challenge of global warming and the finite nature of fossil fuels. Nanostructured materials including functional polymers offer unique properties or combinations of properties as electrodes and electrolytes in a range of electrochemical devices. Also, one of the key challenges facing the widespread use and commercialization of promising electrochemical devices is the high cost of the electrode and electrolyte materials and inefficiencies in their assembly and utilization. In this talk, I will present examples of how we are designing nanostructured materials such as self-assembled copolymers, inorganic materials and hybrid templates that can be incorporated into multifunctional composites for high performance electrochemical devices.
