In this report, tetrathiafulvalene (TF)-based reactive mesogens (TFE and TFT) are synthesized to develop an encryptable smart window combining electrochromism and optics. The self-assembled and polymerizable TF mixture (TFM, TFE:TFT=1:1) can reversibly control the absorption wavelength of the TF chromophore in response to the redox reactions. The hierarchical nanostructure of mesogens is simply formed by the facile route of macroscopic coating and self-assembly process. Further polymerization of the mesogens enhance the thermal and mechanical stability, resulting in the practical applications to electrochromic devices. The application complexity is improved using polarized light, and the optical correlation between the optical anisotropy of TFM and the angle of polarized light was elucidated. Several smart windows that can encrypt specific information or protect personal privacy are demonstrated. This work was supported by Mid-Career Researcher Program (2021R1A2C2009423).
