We studied the mechanochemical reactivity of a series of monodisperse cyclic and linear polylactides. The polymers were subjected to ultrasonication (US) and ball-mill grinding (BMG) and their degradation kinetics were explored. Cyclic polymers underwent slower degradation than linear polymers. Specifically, we observed 9.0-times and 1.9-times larger scission rates for linear polymers with US and BMG, respectively. We also monitored the generation of linear intermediates. These results provide new insight into how the cyclic polymer architecture influences the mechanochemical degradation of polymers.
