A universal nanocoating method has been developed utilizing the liquid crystalline (LC) phase of a 2D-nanoclay for the development of non-toxic, semitransparent, and highly effective gas barrier coatings. We utilized LC phase of aqueous montmorillonite (MMT), which exhibited unique viscoelastic rheological properties. Utilizing LC feature of MMT, it is possible to serve as a universal coating on various substrates including flat or topographically featured surfaces, and also to act as a structural scaffold for the introduction of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), resulting in the formation of periodically stacked MMT/PVP. MMT/PVP coating exhibited high gas barrier properties for H2. Also, MMT/PVP imparts structural reinforcement with improved hardness and modulus while retaining semi-transparent optical properties. We believe this work will contribute to the gas barrier coatings in food or biosafety-related packaging applications, as all components of MMT/PVP are food-grade materials.
