Epoxy resins are widely used thermosetting materials in various industrial fields such as adhesives, coatings, and composite matrixes. However, most of commercialized epoxy resins are prepared from bisphenol A (BPA) causing serious adverse effects on human health and environment. In this research, we synthesized a bio-based cycloaliphatic epoxy as the adhesive material using L-carveol obtained from spearmint. The carveol epoxy resin was prepared by epoxidazing L-carveol with meta-Chloroperoxybenzoic acid(m-CPBA). The chemical structure of the product was characterized by FT-IR and 13C-NMR. Equivalent epoxy weight(EEW) of the carveol epoxy was determined by the HCl/1,4-dioxane back titration method. The UV-curing behavior of the carveol epoxy with cationic photoinitiator was investigated by photo-differential scanning calorimetry(photo-DSC). The lap shear strength of adhesive single lap joints was measured to characterize the adhesive strength of carveol epoxy.
