Sensitive and selective detection of acetone in human exhaled breath plays an important role in the diagnosis of diabetes. However, obtaining a reliable response to ppb levels of acetone and avoiding cross-sensitivity due to the large amount of moisture in exhaled breath are still great challenges. In this work, we are synthesized core-shell structured nanoparticle composites with polyaniline (PANi) in the core and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) shells. Here, PANi, as a conductive polymer, have the advantages of high sensitivity, fast response time and low-temperature reactants as the sensor. The PANi@HPMC core-shell nanoparticles based sensors showed reliable acetone detection at concentration of 50 ppb even at room temperature, which is lower than the concentration of 1.8 ppm in exhaled breathing of diabetic patients. The PANi@HPMC core-shell nanoparticles and the acetone sensing approach can be open a new opportunity for a simple and noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes..
